Description
The presentation will begin with a brief introduction to the history of Quakerism, and a little about the distinctiveness of Quaker culture, followed by a look at the wide range of Quaker sources.
The talk will be restricted to Quakerism in the British Isles.
Speaker Ben Beck
Ben’s mother’s family were nearly all Quakers right back to the mid 17th century, and he was brought up as a Quaker, although as someone without any personal religious belief he chose to leave the Society of Friends when he reached adulthood. Despite that he continues to have great respect for Quaker history and for Quakers today. He has been a member of the Friends Historical Society since 1987, of the Quaker Family History Society since its inception in 1993, and of the Quaker Studies Research Association since 2003. He is currently QFHS secretary, and spent some years previously as editor of Quaker Connections, the QFHS journal. He has had a number of articles published in the Genealogists' Magazine and Family Tree magazine, and was also the author of the entry on Robert Foster in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
