Description

Drawing on the research for her book "Pit Lasses- Women and Girls in the Mining Industry 1800-1914" Denise will seek to inform on the roles played by women in the mines and dispel some of the myths.

Speaker Denise Bates

Denise was born in Sheffield and studied Modern History at St Anne's College, Oxford, where she specialised in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Discovering her family tree rekindled her passion for history. When an opportunity arose to research and write about the hidden world of the women who used to work underground in coal mines, she decided to take it. This has resulted in her book "Pit Lasses".
